Liminal will be bringing our bell tower back to the Goonhilly Village Green for the Gathering.  On 18 May 2019 between 11am and 4pm, the bells will ring out on the hour and half hour to mark a Transient Parish for the duration of the Festival.

For this year’s Goonhilly Village Green Gathering we have been developing ideas linking the transmission both of sound broadcast by bells and data transmitted by WiFi to create our ‘transient parish’.Today, airborne data has taken on a role once held by bells, creating and governing communities through territories colonised through information and maintained not by means of physical boundaries but by the reach of a transmitter.

This year then, at the centre of the Goonhilly Village Green, just 100 meters from the Dry-Tree menhir, where the five surrounding parishes of the Lizard meet, the Goonhilly Bell Tower will be raised again. This tower, a 1:10 scale model of the radar towers that once stood on the Downs, will host both a peal of bells and a WiFi transmitter. In doing so it will create both a phonosphere and a datasphere, each with the approximate reach of the borders of the festival site.
